The Joy Ride

It’s the last day of the first half of the year!
What will you do to make it special?

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Building 429

Jason Roy formed Building 429 to reach others with a story similar to his. He faced a hard childhood and found freedom and relief in the local church. The band's name comes from Ephesians 4:29 "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

In The Beginning: Back in 2005, B429 won the Dove Award for New Artist of the Year.

Building 429 hopes the songs on the GRAMMY nominated album We Won’t Be Shaken

will remind people they are more than conquerors in Christ. “We don’t want to spend a lot of time talking about who we were before Christ because the old is gone and new has come,” says lead singer Jason Roy. "We wanted to talk about how David is no longer shepherd boy. Now he’s King. We didn’t want to talk about Moses the stutterer. We wanted to talk about Moses the leader of the nation. We really felt like we wanted to make a record that said, ‘Stand up! You have been called. We are God’s children. Who can stand against what God has begun?"

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Michael W. Smith

Michael Whitaker Smith was born October 7, 1957 to Paul and Barbara Smith in Kenova, West Virginia. Michael was your typical Southern boy – active in baseball, his family’s church activities, and playing piano. He wrote his first song at age 5 (I’m sure it was precious) - but as a child, he longed to be a professional baseball player!

In 1982, Michael was asked to play keyboards in a band that was backing up Christian & Pop sensation, Amy Grant. Michael toured and wrote with Amy for years before launching his own solo career. In 1989 his song Go West Young Man began what would become one of the most legendary careers in Christian music.

From pavement pounding superstar of the 1990s, to record label founding, mega-producer artist who jets around the world on private planes - Smitty has sung for Presidents and orphans alike! According to his Twitter feed, this week he’s working on a new Christmas album with Country superstars Lady Antebellum. But that’s just another day in the life of a guy who’s sold more than 15 million albums, scored 28 No. 1 hits, earning three GRAMMYs and more than 40 Dove Awards.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jonny Diaz

Jonny comes from a family of overachievers. Both he and two of his brothers went to Florida State University on full baseball scholarships! These guys are talented - two of them even went pro! But a year into college, Jonny found his calling was music and not playing ball. Turning away from a full ride, he focused on what God called him to do - and it is paying off in spades!

From the beginning of his music career, Diaz’s desire has been to write songs that entertain, encourage and challenge fellow believers. Jonny Diaz on writing songs: “I attempted to break free from some of the traditional confines of Christian music, but I couldn’t get away from the fact that most of my songs revolve around my relationship with Christ. He is the focus of my life and I find it impossible to honestly record my emotions and my journey without including Him."

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Needtobreathe

Named after the acclaimed University of Alabama football coach Bear Bryant, brothers Bear and Nathaniel Bryant "Bo" Rinehart were born and raised in rural Possum Kingdom, SC, where their pastor father ran a church camp.

Formed in 1999, Needtobreathe built an impressive regional following, playing throughout the Southeast. They toured non-stop, recording at their home studio and got noticed by Hollywood producers, who have used their music in television and film.

The band’s latest release is heavily influenced by their Southern roots - drawing from the Blues, Country and Southern Gospel.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Crowder

David Crowder has been a worship leader since college. While at Baylor University in Waco, TX - he and some friends founded a church focussed on college students called University Baptist Church. His friend Chris Seay (Robbie Seay’s brother) was the preacher and David led worship.

As the worship band progressed, they began writing original worship songs - and even recorded a couple of independent albums, distributed mostly around Texas at youth events. This was the beginning of the David Crowder*Band. For fifteen years, this church worship group transformed popular worship music, helped establish the Passion Conference and released some of the most creative and exciting Christian albums of the new millennium.

But fifteen years is a long time. Families were started, different career paths were chosen and ultimately, the band decided it was time for some change. Some of DC*B formed The Digital Age and David formed a new collective of worship leaders and musicians under the name Crowder.

Crowder’s debut album Neon Steeple was released this May and is both familiar and wildly different. The new sound blends Bluegrass, Country, Folk and Electronica for an often introspective, but always boldly praise oriented collection of songs.

The Joy Ride

There’s only ever going to be one TODAY… Don’t squander it.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jamie Grace

Jamie Grace is a 22 year old singer-songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. Her debut single “Hold Me feat. TobyMac” landed her a nomination at the 2012 Grammy awards where she was the youngest nominee. That year, she was also nominated for a Billboard Award and four Dove Awards, going home as the Dove Awards New Artist of the Year.

Jamie Grace has since landed her first feature film (as Rachel in Grace Unplugged), co-hosted the Dove Awards pre-show and just released her sophomore album!

Jamie got her start by posting covers and original songs onto her YouTube channel - capturing the attention of TobyMac. She still posts a LOT on YouTube… like a lot, a lot.

Awesomesauce: Jamie was fan-voted onto a limited edition 7-Up can. Becoming the first Christian artist to become “7-Up” can famous. That’s just a hop, skip and a jump from “Beatles” famous.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Laura Story

Laura Story won a GRAMMY and several Dove Awards for her song Blessings. Her lyrics remind us that God works in ways that we would prefer He didn't - but that His ways are truly better. It was a hard learned lesson. For several years Laura has walked a dark path with her husband Martin Elvington. Just a year after they married Martin was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He was kept alive with a breathing machine and surgeons operated multiple times trying to save his life. Through the process Martin lost much of his vision and continues to suffer severe memory loss.

Like the story of Job, God has poured out tremendous blessing on Laura and her family after a very difficult time. Laura and Martin welcomed their first child last Summer (daughter, Josie) - and now the couple is expecting twins!. Plus Laura Story continues to serve at a mega-church in Atlanta where she teaches a new generation how to lead worship.

The Joy Ride

The weekend will be here before you know it!
Don’t miss out on all that’s happening in your community - check out the Joy Notes!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
The Museum

The Museum took shape when singer Ben Richter and guitarist Geoffrey Ashcraft moved from Texas to Georgia and plugged into a church where drummer/programmer Josh Kirk was the janitor. Soon they were leading local worship services together and then traveling on musical mission trips overseas.

Joined by bassist Chris Brink in 2009, The Museum is continuing its commitment to global outreach while also developing an important bond with churches across the United States. Ben’s passion for staying rooted in a spiritual community brought the group to Briarlake Church near Atlanta where they still lead worship most Sundays. Additionally, the guys have helped out at neighboring North Point Community Church’s partner Atlanta locations and around the country.  Ben also leads worship at the multi-site Elevation Church in North Carolina on a recurring basis.

What's in a Name: The Museum is actually named after a revolution. During a 2008 mission trip to Romania, drummer Josh Kirk found himself at a ceremony commemorating the end of Communism in that country twenty years earlier. “There was a small, humble museum near the square that told the story,” he recalls. “Turns out it was a group of Christians that actually brought about that political and social revolution.” Twenty years later the political changes were celebrated but the spiritual center of the revolution had been mostly forgotten. Kirk saw little evidence of Christian influence in the culture. “That little museum remained though,” he adds, “offering a glimpse into the kind of faith that can turn a nation upside down.”

Fun & Games: If there's a basketball court nearby, that's where you'll find the guys of The Museum during tour stops. Plus, now that it's baseball season you'll find them proudly supporting the Atlanta Braves.

It’s days like this, where what I’d do for a Klondike Bar begins to escalate.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Moriah Peters

Moriah burst onto the Christian radio scene with the beautiful ballad I Choose Jesus. This prayerful song was the title track to her debut album and also her personal mantra. At just 18, the world was offering anything and everything - but she chose Jesus.

Moriah Peters toured relentlessly, sharing her story and struggles - impacting the lives of teenaged girls, especially. Perhaps not since Rebecca St. James has a Christian artist come out of the gate with such an impact in the lives of young people.

Interestingly enough, Moriah found herself dating Rebecca’s brother Joel (of for KING & COUNTRY) - and then last Summer, the couple got married. This is a Summer of touring for the young family, with new albums due out this Summer and Fall from both Moriah and for KING & COUNTRY.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Casey Darnell

Atlanta, Georgia-based worship leader, singer, and songwriter, Casey Darnell, leads worship on a regular basis at North Point Community Church’s five Atlanta campuses, along with numerous other churches across the country. He has become a fixture with major student events and camps, and is in front of more than 50,000 people each year.

North Point has spent years cultivating a community of worship leaders and artists - and recently launched their own record label. They’ve released some incredible worship and Christmas music, including Casey’s first full-length worship project and his latest, self-titled album.

While Casey Darnell’s album is full of original worship songs, when the band tours - their focus is on leading worship, not promoting albums; so they sing an array of worship songs, old and new, by a variety of different song and hymn writers.

Family: Casey was born in Lynchburg, VA - but the family relocated to the Atlanta, GA metro when he was just three. He has a degree in Childhood Education & Communication from Kennesaw State University - is married to Anisa with whom he has two daughters. This July the Darnell’s will celebrate their 10th Anniversary!
