The Joy Ride

The weekend will be here before you know it!
Don’t miss out on all that’s happening in your community - check out the Joy Notes!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
August Rain

August Rain began as a few song collaborations between drummer Frank Bowen and then guitarist Josh Kirk in 2009. The musical style and easy friendship turned out a stellar independent album, landing August Rain on television and as the opening act for a national tour.

In 2010, Matthew Janzen became the lead singer of August Rain and ultimately that change broadened the musical style of the band - catching the ear of Third Day’s Mac Powell, who sings a duet with Matthew on the band’s latest album.

The unique appeal of the music is its ability to reach people with a spiritual message without invoking a "preachy" style. Their goal is to give the listener an experience that goes beyond the immediate - something that sticks with you and makes you think, but with a smile on your face.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Mandisa

Mandisa was a fan favorite on Season 5 of American Idol, going to the final rounds despite dealing with some harsh words from the judges about her weight. She has discussed at length in her book Idol Eyes: My New Perspective on Faith, Fat & Fame, that those hurtful words cut deeply, causing a lot of pain and embarrassment.

Now with three GRAMMY nominations under her belt, and four full albums breaking the charts in Christian music - Mandisa is showing the world that Christians are real people - with real problems but who have a REAL Savior.

Her Struggle: On the whole weight thing - Mandisa has lost over 100 pounds through diet and exercise!

“A struggle is a struggle, and Jesus is there through it all. He is there in compassion and grace. I have found that what He has spoken to me through these songs has been encouraging and I think that’ll be true for other people who are going through their own hard times,” - Mandisa

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Beloved

Kim Hardee was always singing at churches - whether it was for an Easter cantata or the offertory hymn. But when she met Amy Goins and Denise Clark in Sunday School class at Roswell Street Baptist Church (just outside of Atlanta, GA), the three fused into an inseparable trio! Beloved began as a Southern Gospel group, but morphed into modern worship out of a desire to encourage a more diverse part of the body of Christ.

In 2007, Beloved began hosting an annual womens conference. In 2009, their entrepreneurial spirit led them to develop their own cosmetic line, Beloved Beauty. After a while the group called it quits and moved on with new seasons of life.

Kim Hardee (Gravel) got married and used her experience with Beloved & Beloved Beauty to create Hardee Girl Inc. with her sister and mother. They lead conferences to inspire and encourage women, have a popular cosmetic line and also a TV show on Lifetime.

Kim is Kim of Queens!  Along with her sister Allisyn and mother Jo, they coach young girls for beauty pageants. And with such drama!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
About A Mile

Jesus carried His cross About A Mile. How far will you carry yours?

The trio of brothers (Adam, Luke & Levi) hail from Butler, Pennsylvania (just outside of Pittsburgh), and can remember embracing their musical instincts as early as they did a devout Christian faith, first modeled by their extremely hard working father, a steel mill staffer who always managed to make ends meet for his family of eight thanks to a firm reliance on the Lord. Their dad would write songs and they would beat on pots and pans and sing along.

Right afters signing with Word Records, lead singer Adam got very sick. He battled illness for months, losing 60 lbs and having to depend on the Lord for everything. He couldn't work, he couldn't sing but he could keep his eyes on Christ. And he did.

This summer the band will release their debut album. Expect big things from these three brothers.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Kutless

This Oregon based rock group is in the midst of a second musical career. After selling nearly 2 million records and touring the world as a preeminent Christian rock quintet, Kutless found a new voice producing quality worship records.

Their first worship album was Strong Tower (2005) - and not only was it a hit with critics and fans, but it revealed the true nature of Kutless' calling - to bring people closer to Jesus. In any industry there is pressure to repeat success and Kutless approached the matter hesitantly. They didn't want to produce another worship record just because everyone loved the first one. The band knew that worship has to be authentic. With much prayer and counsel from their pastors, Kutless have continued to create amazing worship projects; four amazing albums worth!

Of course anyone who has seen Kutless live in concert knows that their worship is … ehem… louder than most.

The Name: Christ took our beating and paid the wages of our sin. Romans 6:23. He took our cuts for us leaving us...Kutless.

How’s your Summer going, so far?

ARTIST OF THE DAY
The Afters

When The Afters broke out onto the scene, it didn't seem like anything could stop them. Their music was fun, their attitudes were joyful and nothing could slow them down!

But life's circumstances quickly changed everything. After losing their longtime friend and manager to a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, two band members decided to part ways with the band, and then there was a life-threatening car wreck, followed by a new member of the band losing a close friend just one week after joining the group.

It was a rough season of change for The Afters. Holding on to their faith and their passion for making music has kept the band focused throughout the mess of it all. Through the pain, faith grew in abundance and that is definitely the message behind their most recent releases.

Ancient History: The four original members of The Afters met while working at a Starbucks together. The band's original name was Screaming Mimes - then they changed it to Blisse. Thankfully a producer talked them into the The Afters.

TV: The Afters' music has been featured on television shows and promos for shows on almost every major network and various cable shows as well - including Grey's Anatomy, Rachel Ray, Dr. Phil, The Biggest Loser, Army Wives, You Deserve It, October Baby, So You Think You Can Dance, Americas Got Talent, The Hills, The Vineyard and more!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Shane & Shane

Life is a whirlwind for Shane & Shane. After years of recording and touring, both men settled down and started families. The Shanes took on worship leading at their home church and had resigned themselves to just being local musicians and family men. By all accounts, it looked like the ride was over.

But God had other plans. After a season of growing with their church and impacting lives of young people through discipleship - God began to write songs through Shane & Shane once again. Really good songs. The best songs they had ever written, in fact. After sending a demo to some friends in Nashville they immediately got picked up by Fair Trade Records (MercyMe) with whom they've now produced two excellent albums.

For their latest album, Bring Your Nothing, Shane & Shane decided to live the dream of anyone who has ever been in a band. The guys bought 22 acres of land outside of Dallas, TX and converted an old ranch house into a state of the art studio - which they named Wellhouse Studios. The Shanes hosted a 7 day retreat with their musical friends and in just one week - the album was written and recorded.

Musical Chairs: Shane Barnard is married to Bethany Dillon, who is also an acclaimed Christian musician.

Teachers: Shane & Shane have created The Worship Initiative as a resource for worship leaders, worldwide. It includes music, tabs, instructional videos and endless encouragement to hone the craft of worship leading.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Aaron Shust

Aaron Shust wrote his first hit songs for his church - never thinking they would be more than a chance to lead his local congregation in worship. My Savior, My God went on to top six different charts at once on its way to becoming the most played song on Christian radio in 2006!

In early 2010 he and his wife made the decision to pull up stakes from Atlanta and move their young family back to Aaron’s Pennsylvania hometown, where he was invited to take on the role of worship leader in the very church he had grown up in. Now they call Pittsburgh “home.” So they could use your prayers...

The past few years have been an emotional rollercoaster for the father of three young sons, yet amongst the challenges there have been miracles with each trial and tribulation. Aaron's second son, Nicky, was extremely ill as an infant and then when their third son, Michael was born, they faced a new set of challenges. He had a heart condition and was diagnosed with Down Syndrome.

“I feel like every day is an adventure. Every day presents a challenge. How do we tackle this one? How do we approach this one? The answer is by the grace of God. In everything that comes our way, whenever we start to find ourselves overwhelmed, the mighty hand of God reaches down and picks us up. I feel that. His hand sustains us and we feel very lifted.”
- Aaron Shust

Christmas: This Spring Aaron finished recording his first ever full-length Christmas album, which we’ll get to listen to in just 5 months!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Holly Starr

Raised on a farm in the small town of Quincy, Washington, Holly Starr is not afraid of hard work. And that's good, because as an up-and-coming Christian artist she's got a hard path ahead of her! She debuted in 2008 and has been putting thousands of miles on various vans, touring the United States and abroad.

Holly Starr is also focused on the global Church. She's worked with Compassion International ever since taking a missions trip to El Salvador.

Family: During a trip to Israel, Holly discovered that she had Jewish ancestors. While leading worship in Israel, Holly met members of her grandmother’s family, whom she had never met and her grandmother hadn’t seen in over 60 years. She was able to reconnect the family members with her grandmother via Skype for a surprise reunion.
