ARTIST OF THE DAY
Jason Castro

“I’ve heard it said that music is the language of the soul. I think it’s something God created for our souls to be able to rejoice in.” - Jason Castro

Jason Castro is the bright eyed, dreadlocked Christian who captivated the nation on Season 7 of American Idol. The Texan had his pick of music careers after the show and chose to make music aimed at worship.

Raised in the church by a musical family of Colombian descent, Castro started drumming at 11, playing music in the youth ministry, and joined his father in leading worship. As a drummer, Castro loved the intensity of bands like MxPx and Switchfoot. While in college Jason moved from being the crazy drummer to the introspective song-writer. Which meant transitioning from behind the drum kit to behind the microphone.

Jason Castro finished in fourth place on his season of American Idol. That's saying something for a guy who never really thought he had the chops to be a professional singer/songwriter. As a vocal member of the I Am Second movement, Jason has proudly broadcasted his faith, but with his naturally gentle spirit.

Hair: Jason has been rocking dreadlocks for years, but recently cut them off (probably because his daughter would yank at them) and now he looks like a completely different person.

The City Harmonic

The City Harmonic is a Juno and Covenant Award winning worship band originally birthed out of an inter-denominational worship & mission movement in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The City Harmonic formed in 2009 as four worship leaders from four small churches that went from anonymity to widespread acclaim in a blink, headlining tours across North America and gathering numerous awards along the way.

The heartfelt worship songs on the band's latest album HEART was fueled by bassist Eric Fusilier's battle with cancer - a battle he has won!

MidDay Joy

If you haven't, be sure to read this month's Manna Magazine. The theme for January is "Promises." As I mentioned on the air today, Josh (your Joy Ride host) wrote an excellent article about the promise that's made at a wedding...but not between the bride and groom. Here's an excerpt for you. (Read the full text at readthemanna.org)

Promise Ring

by Josh Millwood

Weddings have become a spectator sport. We go. We watch. We eat cake, dance and try to photobomb every picture. The end. Billions of dollars are spent in America putting on spectacular shows, with elegant or over-the-top themes (maybe even a Sylvester Stallone classic Over The Top theme). There are reality series about weddings.  There are endless movies about brides running away or grooms learning to dance. Marriage is the new professional sporting event. But it used to be a covenant.

You are required by law to have a witness when you get married. Even at the Justice of the Peace. Even in Vegas. Why? Because this promise matters. Western civilization is built on the back of the stability of family. The definition of family has changed many times. The most recent has been a swing away from the nuclear family (Dad + Mom = Children) to anything goes, whose math doesn’t quite add up. Bear in mind, families used to place a higher importance on grandparents, cousins, creepy uncles and, the further back you go, multiple wives and concubines. But in all forms, the family quite simply means stability.

Every wedding ceremony should have a bit in the middle, somewhere after the introduction and prayer—but before the unity candle—where the bride and groom can address the attendees.  I imagine this address to go like this:

Groom: Thank you all for coming, even the ones of you who think [Bride] is crazy for marrying me. It means a lot.

Bride: I’m not crazy. I’m not pregnant. I truly love him. I promise.

Groom: Speaking of promises, we aren’t the only ones making them today.  You see, we invited you here not just to witness this awesome union [Bride/Groom High Five], but to make us a promise…

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Phil King

“My one focus and desire is to usher people into the presence of God and love on Jesus the way He deserves to be loved on.” - Phil King

Phil King began songwriting at just 9 years old. At age 16, he began leading praise and worship where he attended church in central California and by the age of 17 Phil had picked up the guitar and piano.  King’s passion for Praise & Worship and his love for the Lord and people are clearly evident in his music.

Some of Phil’s musical influences are greats such as: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jonny Lang, Stevie Wonder, and Eric Clapton. It's a bluesy, rock n roll, eclectic mix that makes his music sound fresh, but also familiar. Phil calls it soul. His peers agree - with Israel Houghton comparing him to GRAMMY winner Jonny Lang.

Service: Phil is currently serving at Grace Church in Franklin, Tennessee

Winter won't last forever.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
JJ Weeks Band

The JJ Weeks Band, based in Macon GA, have toured extensively and released three independent projects. Each of the guys have been involved in ministry in some capacity since childhood. Whether singing solos, performing in church musicals, or leading worship, music and ministry have always gone hand in hand. That heart for ministry led Weeks to step out in faith and push for a career in music full-time.

The past three years have been challenging to say the least - inspiring to speak the truth. Three years of incessant challenges from family deaths, a difficult pregnancy, and the subsequent health risks with a newborn, to the taxing lifestyle of being full-time touring musicians were all catalysts that birthed the band's latest album.

"We want people to know that God has their back. That they can trust Him in the midst of the struggles of life because He loves us." - JJ Weeks

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Rhett Walker Band

“I’m blessed with a beautiful wife and two children who have walked with me every step of the way. My faith, my family, and my country are the most important things in my life." - Rhett Walker

Rhett Walker is the son of a preacher man - through and through. Raised in the deep South, expected to behave and perform as any preacher's kid is. But when Rhett's family up and moved when he was 16 and enjoying high school - Rhett rebelled. He got involved with a rough crowd, got in fights, began to drink and do drugs. In no time, Rhett was expelled from his new high school. His folks sent him to a private Christian school where he continued to push boundaries and got his new girlfriend pregnant.

And here's where Rhett Walker's story of repentance begins.

Rhett sat down with his pregnant girlfriend April and begged forgiveness. He and April got married (while still in high school). Rhett recommitted his life to Christ, threw out the drugs and by the power of the Holy Spirit began to prove his life change was the work of God.

The rebellious teenager became the courageous family man; those two scared kids who did everything wrong just a few years back are, by God’s grace, striving to do everything right and even counseling other couples using themselves as a cautionary tale.
