The Joy Ride

Make some weekend plans with our JoyNotes!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Kari Jobe

Kari Jobe knew at 10 that she would be a worship leader. Raised in a Christian home with a father who was a traveling minister, Kari began singing in church when she was 3. Through high school and college, Kari watched God set the path before her as she began leading worship in various places. She spent time studying at Oral Roberts University, Christ For The Nations and Dallas Baptist University, where she finished her Psychology and Pastoral Ministries degree.

For nearly a decade Kari has been a worship pastor at her home church in Southlake, TX. She is a featured worship leader on many Gateway Worship projects and in 2009 released her self-titled debut album (and promptly won her first Dove award). Since then she’s released more heartfelt worship albums and a Christmas project.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Dara Maclean

Dara Maclean is a singer and songwriter who pours her passions into her music. Her dream of ministering around the world through music has come to pass through a couple of years that could only be described as a whirlwind! After releasing her debut You Got My Attention, Dara hit the road with Casting Crowns and NewSong. She spent time in Uganda, singing, teaching and helping any way she could.

God was using her to further His kingdom - but He was also pouring out blessings upon her. She’ had radio hits, a rising fan-base - and met, fell in love with and married her husband, Donnie.

Maclean’s journey is, in and of itself, a testament to the power God’s faithfulness. She grew up in Ft. Worth, Tex., immersed in music and ministry from age 7, songwriting and pursuing a calling in the music industry since age 13, all the while learning and growing spiritually, as well as developing an appreciation for all things soul/Motown music to worship music, thanks to her supportive musician/pastor parents.

Her sophomore release, Wanted is only pushing deeper into her creativity and a hope that is firmly placed in Jesus.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
John Mark McMillan

John Mark McMillan wrote How He Loves. A song that has been recorded by a number of other artists, including the David Crowder Band, Kari Jobe, Jesus Culture and Hillsong. It’s a desperate worship song written from a terrible, but faith-affirming experience - the death of a friend who was on staff at McMillan’s church.

There’s a dark side to many of McMillan’s worship songs. Like the Psalms and Lamentations, it sometimes seems that a lot of genuine worship is born out of agony, fear and doubt. McMillan is comfortable exploring those themes in his songs - even if they are uncomfortable experiences that help craft them. And his Johnny Cash-like demeanor gives way to an authentic sound - something both familiar yet very different from other worship leaders.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Ashes Remain

Ashes Remain’s Josh Smith and Ryan Nalepa (guitar/keys) met one summer leading worship at a youth camp located in rural Maryland - not too far from Gettysburg, PA. Over the course of that summer, Smith and Nalepa had a feeling that God was calling them to walk down similar paths. Desiring to be obedient to God’s will, Smith and Nalepa committed to pray together each day throughout the summer, asking God that if He wanted them to form a band to make His will known to them.

Months later, Smith, back in Florida, received a phone call from a church in Maryland inviting him to lead worship full time. It just so happened that the church was ten minutes down the road from Nalepa.

The band's Fair Trade Services debut What I've Become was written mostly for teenagers, from the perspective of what it is like to feel as if there is no hope, where you are your own worst enemy and ultimately what it looks like to go from that very real and dark place to one where there is hope and step into the light.

That journey from dark to light isn't always a swift one and sometimes has to be walked many times, but it is a journey that the band is familiar with and feels called to go on with their fans.

As lead vocalist Josh Smith puts it, “We’re just broken people who need Jesus.”

Sounds Like: Ashes Remain sounds like early Kutless, a smidgen of Pillar with a dash of Skillet. Hard-hitting rock with a heart for worship.

The Joy Ride

New Week.
Let’s DO THIS!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Aaron Shust

Aaron Shust wrote his first hit songs for his church - never thinking they would be more than a chance to lead his local congregation in worship. My Savior, My God went on to top six different charts at once on its way to becoming the most played song on Christian radio in 2006!

In early 2010 he and his wife made the decision to pull up stakes from Atlanta and move their young family back to Aaron’s Pennsylvania hometown, where he was invited to take on the role of worship leader in the very church he had grown up in. Now they call Pittsburgh “home.” So they could use your prayers...

The past few years have been an emotional roller coaster for the father of three young sons, yet amongst the challenges there have been miracles with each trial and tribulation. Aaron's second son, Nicky, was extremely ill as an infant and then when their third son, Michael was born, they faced a new set of challenges. He had a heart condition and was diagnosed with Down Syndrome.

“I feel like every day is an adventure. Every day presents a challenge. How do we tackle this one? How do we approach this one? The answer is by the grace of God. In everything that comes our way, whenever we start to find ourselves overwhelmed, the mighty hand of God reaches down and picks us up. I feel that. His hand sustains us and we feel very lifted.”

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Francesca Battistelli

At only six years old, Francesca was an aspiring actress. She longed to be on Broadway - singing and dancing and acting. Francesca’s passion for life on the stage wasn't all that surprising, given her mom and dad’s extensive theater background. Her parents met when her dad was the assistant conductor for the national tour of “The King and I,” while her mom played Anna, the show's female lead opposite Yul Brynner.

When Francesca was 15, she put her skills to use in an all-girl pop group out of Orlando, just like NSync! But when that gig eventually ended, Francesca says she was thankful for an opportunity to clear her head. “Not long after, I recharged my batteries by going to this youth ministry that I absolutely loved,” Francesca shares. “It was there where the Lord really captured my heart for Christian music. I started playing guitar and really longed to bring something authentic to the scene that even non-Christians could listen to.”

From there, it’s Christian music History! Francesca released her debut My Paper Heart to rave critical reviews and a slew of #1 hits. Her debut album went on to become the first Gold record (Over 500,000 copies sold) debut of a Christian artist in a decade! Now four albums into her career (including a stellar Christmas record), Francesca Battistelli is a Christian radio mainstay, award winner and all around awesome person!

ARTIST OF THE DAY
About A Mile

Jesus carried His cross About A Mile. How far will you carry yours?

The trio of brothers (Adam, Luke & Levi) hail from Butler, Pennsylvania (just outside of Pittsburgh), and can remember embracing their musical instincts as early as they did a devout Christian faith, first modeled by their extremely hard working father, a steel mill staffer who always managed to make ends meet for his family of eight thanks to a firm reliance on the Lord. Their dad would write songs and they would beat on pots and pans and sing along.

Right afters signing with Word Records, lead singer Adam got very sick. He battled illness for months, losing 60 lbs and having to depend on the Lord for everything. He couldn't work, he couldn't sing but he could keep his eyes on Christ. And he did.

Nice Words: The bands’ self-titled debut has been called a blend of Goo-Goo Dolls, grunge and dcTalk’s Jesus Freak. That’s a pretty epic review.

ARTIST OF THE DAY
Michael W. Smith

Michael Whitaker Smith was born October 7, 1957 to Paul and Barbara Smith in Kenova, West Virginia. Michael was your typical Southern boy – active in baseball, his family’s church activities, and playing piano. He wrote his first song at age 5 (I’m sure it was precious) - but as a child, he longed to be a professional baseball player!

In 1982, Michael was asked to play keyboards in a band that was backing up Christian & Pop sensation, Amy Grant. Michael toured and wrote with Amy for years before launching his own solo career. In 1989 his song Go West Young Man began what would become one of the most legendary careers in Christian music.

From pavement pounding superstar of the 1990s, to record label founding, mega-producer artist who jets around the world on private planes - Smitty has sung for Presidents and orphans alike! According to his Twitter feed, this week he’s working on a new Christmas album with Country superstars Lady Antebellum. But that’s just another day in the life of a guy who’s sold more than 15 million albums, scored 28 No. 1 hits, earning three GRAMMYs and more than 40 Dove Awards.
